GRAMVOUSSA – BALOS

Starting from the port of Kissamos, followed by a pleasant voyage, we will reach Gramvousa where the ancient shipyard of Tersanas will draw your attention, as well as the geological phenomenon of land elevation by 6 to 9m above the sea level. Here you will have the opportunity to either enjoy the beach with crystal clear water and the amazing view of the never ending sea lagoon, or climb on the top of the steep rock to see the Venetian castle. Afterwards we take a 2nd short boat trip to the fabulous lagoon of Balos, a shallow and warm water lagoon and one of Crete's loveliest spots. If you would like to discover a small island covered with sand dunes and small trees, sandy beaches and tropical waters, then you must visit Elafonissi, one of the most exotic beaches of Crete. A protected natural reserve by the Natura 2000 European Act, Elafonissi is a peninsula which breaks in two parts by water giving the impression of being a separate island.
The sea is so shallow that you can cross over the island by foot. The white sand which in many places gets pink shades of the thousands of crushed shells, gives a different look to the beach. The crystal clear and blue - green waters remind of the Caribbean.

SAMARIA GORGE
An experience not to be missed!
Hike along the rugged terrain of the Samaria Gorge cutting through a limestone plateau and at a length of 18 kilometres it is Europe's longest gorge. You will visit and will surely be enchanted by the beautiful landscapes of Crete. At one point of the gorge the walls are only 3 metres apart from each other, and are known as the 'iron curtains' with sides rising sheer up to 100 feet.
The hike is followed by a short cruise around the southern coastline to the pretty costal village of Chora Sfakion, where you will have the opportunity for lunch break in one of the local traditional Tavernas.

SPINALONGA-AGIOS NIKOLAOS

Spinalonga, is the last leper colony in Europe. Originally, Venetians fortified the islet in 1579, by building a fortress with 40 cannons and they are actually the best preserved walls in Europe.
It used to be a leper colony from 1903 until 1957, where lepers could have a better life, medical help and economical support. The ruins of the market street with the shops, the hospital and many small houses in which lepers lived isolated, can still be seen.
Ag.Nikolaos is built on the side of the Gulf of Mirabello. In the centre of Agios Nikolaos is the lake Voulismeni, probably created by an earthquake. You can have a coffee break or a walk around the lake, which gives you a great view from above, over the center and the harbo. Next to the lovely harbor are shady tree-lined streets filled with shops.

LASSITHI PLATEAU
In the middle of the mountains there is a magnificent plateau situated at a height of 820-850 meters. It is surrounded by precipitous mountain peaks, all more than 1,000 meters high, forming a strong natural fortification that has only eight relatively accessible passes. Lassithi Plateau is well known for the thousands of white sailed windmills, 10 000 in all, designed by Venetian engineers in 1464 and used for irrigation. Although very few windmills are in use today, it still makes a splendid sight against the mountains and sky.
Cave “DICTAION ANDRON”
The mountains hide many caves, but we will visit the most important. The cave “Dictaion Andron” was the birthplace of Zeus according to Greek Mythology.
Monastery of Panagia Kera
The monastery of Panagia Kera Kardiotissa (Holly Mother). The monastery is located in a pleasant setting, high in the mountains of Dikte, with a view of the Pediada Valley and the sea.
Monastery of Vidiani
Just where the plateau begins is the impressive Monastery of Vidiani, which is dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi (the Life-Giving Spring) with its small fountain in the yard that is surrounded by flowers and huge cypress trees.
MOCHOS VILLAGE
Τhe village of Mochos is an original, lively Cretan village where the way of life has hardly changed at all over the centuries. You can have a coffee in one of the original Kafenions and take a walk around the village itself to find out what Cretan village life is like.

Sitia is an absorbing place to wander around, doing no more than enjoying atmosphere. The small narrow streets behind the seafront feature the everyday scenes of a Cretan provincial small town: villagers in to stock up on news and necessities and stores which cater to their every conceivable need.
Monastery of Toplou
The monastery with its imposing belfry, 33 metres high, stands in a harsh, almost desert landscape with giant wind turbines turning in the background; this is one of the first wind farms in Crete.
Vai, or more specifically the palm forest of Vai, is one of the most popular sights in Crete and one of the most beautiful and special places in the whole Mediterranean. Vai was “discovered” by hippies who were turned out of Matala in the early 70s and sought a new refuge in the area. By the early 80s, Vai had become a permanent campsite and been transformed into vast rubbish tip.
IERAPETRA
Ierapetra is a seaside town with an exceptional beach at its busy centre. It has the highest average of sunny days and the highest temperatures in Crete and Greece, with an annual average of 20 C. It is a town which has everything in abundance except of the rain.

SAILING TRIPS TO THE ISLAND OF DIA

Dia is 5 km long and 3 km wide and covers an area about 12 sq km, extending from west to east. North of the Dia, there are two islets with gulls, Paximadi and Petalidi. In the southern part of the island there are 4 quiet bays: the gulf of St George, which is the only port of the island, the Gulf of Kapari, the bay of Panagia and the Gulf of Agrielia. On the east, there is the Gulf of Aginara. The island has a maximum height of 220 meters and the landscape is generally characterized by stones and shrubs. There are areas with rocky cliffs that reach 60 meters.
The Undersea discoveries of Jacques Yves Cousteau in 1974-5, while searching for the lost Atlantis between Crete and Santorini, with a special bathyscape, are of great ecological and archeological interest, as seven wrecks were found on Dia. In 1976, Cousteau discovered some squared and rectangular rocks in the seabed that made up an artificial breakwater, which researchers named Cyclopean Walls. Cousteau suggested that there stood one of the biggest and most important ports in the whole island of Crete.
